BEST PRACTICE 1: GIVE IT, BUILD IT- FREESHIPS FOR STUDENTS

OBJECTIVES

  • To expand opportunities for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education.
  • To create a culture of academic excellence within the institution.
  • To inculcate equity and fairness in education.
  • To attract a diverse student population by offering fee concessions, creating a more inclusive learning environment that celebrates and values students from various socio-economic backgrounds.

THE CONTEXT

Ilahia College of Arts and Science is deeply rooted in the belief that every individual deserves access to quality education, regardless of their financial circumstances. With this vision in mind, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
In response to the socio-economic disparities prevalent in our society, the college has recognized the need to address the financial challenges faced by students from underprivileged backgrounds.
Through extensive research and outreach efforts, the management has gained insights into the financial struggles faced by students and their families, ranging from limited household income to unforeseen financial crises. Despite the government's effective provision of various scholarships, only a fraction of students received them compared to the total student population. Many students never had the privilege of obtaining scholarships at any level. Addressing the financial struggles of these students became the need of the hour.
Understanding the profound impact of these challenges on students' academic pursuits and overall well-being, the management has made it a priority to address these issues proactively. Thus, the management decided to implement a comprehensive fee concession programme for students. The decision stems from a deep commitment to social responsibility and inclusivity embedded within the core values of Ilahia College.

THE PRACTICE

The practice of providing fee concessions to economically backward students is not just a policy but a cornerstone of Ilahia College in its commitment to inclusivity and social justice in higher education. Unlike many other colleges in India, the fee concession programme of Ilahia is comprehensive, proactive, and deeply integrated into its institutional ethos.
The fee concession is designed to cater to the diverse needs of students from economically poor backgrounds, with flexible eligibility criteria that take into account various financial circumstances like family size, income of parents, medical expenses and other exceptional circumstances. This nuanced approach ensures that no deserving student is overlooked or excluded from receiving financial assistance and be able to pursue their educational goals with confidence and dignity.
Ilahia College of Arts And Science offers funds dedicated solely to providing financial assistance in the form of Freeship to deserving students. From 2018 - 2023, the college has allocated and disbursed a total of Rs. 1,52, 43,002/- (ONE CRORE FIFTY-TWO LAKHS FORTY THREE THOUSAND AND TWO ONLY) towards fee concessions, demonstrating its commitment to providing financial assistance and fostering inclusivity among its student body. Deserving students were given the concession throughout their academic life, without any interruption.
Overall, Ilahia College of Arts and Science sets a commendable example of how institutions of higher education can proactively address socio-economic disparities and promote inclusivity through robust fee concession practices. By prioritizing the needs of economically backward students and providing comprehensive support beyond just financial assistance, Ilahia College exemplifies a commitment to equity, access, and excellence in the landscape of Indian higher education.

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS

Ilahia College of Arts and Science has been successful in implementing the fee concession programme for students. A tangible outcome and qualitative feedback from beneficiaries made the programme an iconic practice of the institution.
Firstly, the increased enrollment of economically backward students demonstrates the effectiveness of the programme in breaking down financial barriers and expanding access to higher education.
Secondly, improved academic performance and higher retention rates among fee concession recipients underscore the programme's impact in fostering a supportive learning environment where students can thrive academically despite financial constraints.
Additionally, the higher graduation rates among beneficiaries highlight the programme’s role in empowering students to successfully complete their degree and embark on promising career paths.
Students have provided positive reviews and feedback on the fee concession programme, expressing gratitude for the significant reduction in their financial burden. These testimonials from students attest to the transformative impact of fee concessions in alleviating financial stress, enhancing educational opportunities, and instilling a sense of hope and confidence in their future prospects. Many students who were unable to obtain any scholarships in their academic life were given the opportunity to continue their education with proper financial support, which proved to be a boon for them.
